Family Tree Productions (FTP), founded in 1992 by David Assa, Will Hammond, Fred Scales and Kevin “Darkside” Smith, is committed to increasing musical creativity and producing high quality music. The founders collectively have over 30 years experience writing, producing and performing hip-hop, R&B and other soulful sounds. With roots in Europe and America, they began their career as independent songwriters and have experienced success with their own individual projects. Will Hammond appeared on the Billboard Top 5 hits, Fred Scales worked as a writer/producer, and Kevin “Darkside” Smith and David Assa enjoyed success on their solo project titled “Impossible Cocktail”.


Their studio "The Foundation" located in San Francisco, houses a Pro Tools™ Mix recording system and a cross section of Monster Cable™ wired digital, analog and outboard gear.


Family Tree has written and produced a television theme song for “First Cut”, an award winning show on KRON Channel 4. They produced the radio theme for “NRG”, a French radio station, worked with David Bowie’s producer, Tony Visconti, and produced musical tracks for Marc Lavoine, France’s top singer. Family Tree has produced three albums for the award winning hip-hop group Midnight Voices. As a result of their work, the group won the “Best Live Band” award and their single “Fluid” became the Billboard Magazine ’s pick of the week.


Family Tree’s clients include singer/songwriter Sakai, Soul Folk (formerly Colorfolks), Faith Fancher’s Breast Cancer Foundation, Femmes Fatales and Ziv.
